Pdf Summary
The Foot and Ankle Arthroscopy course, held June 28-29, 2019 at OLC, provided comprehensive instruction on new techniques to enhance surgical practices. The two-day agenda included a mix of lectures, cadaver lab demonstrations, and case discussions led by expert faculty.

Day 1 began early with locker assignments and a welcome introduction by course chairs James Stone, M.D. and Richard Ferkel, M.D., outlining the course philosophy and performance standards. Morning lectures covered anterior and posterior arthroscopy techniques, management of osteochondral lesions of the talus (including microfracture, osteochondral transfer, and biologics), and arthroscopic interventions for arthritis including fusion and total ankle replacement.

Midday featured a live stream demo from Wright Medical showcasing Cartiva and minimally invasive surgery (MIS) techniques, followed by lunch with case discussions. Afternoon sessions addressed ankle fractures, arthroscopic vs open repairs for instability, diagnosis and treatment of syndesmosis injuries, and tendoscopy focusing on posterior tibial and peroneal tendon pathology.

Hands-on cadaver labs emphasized lateral subtalar joint approaches, arthroscopic OCL treatments, lateral stabilization, and syndesmosis/medial repairs. Evening included dinner, moderated case discussions on challenging cases, and a faculty dinner.

Day 2 began with lectures debating Achilles tendon repair techniques—open repair versus minimally invasive methods—plus related procedures including gastroc recession. Foot surgery topics included great toe arthroscopy, plantar fascia release, and MIS techniques in bunion surgery.

The morning lab sessions provided demonstrations on Achilles repair and posterior arthroscopy applications using cadaver specimens. The course concluded at noon with acknowledgements to the distinguished faculty and master instructors.

Overall, the program offered a thorough blend of didactic and practical components, emphasizing both established standards and evolving MIS technologies to improve patient outcomes in foot and ankle arthroscopy.
