Video Summary
This study examined long-term opioid use following rotator cuff repair (ARCR) and the impact of preoperative opioid education. Patients were randomized to receive standard care or additional pre-op education about opioid risks and proper use via a brief video and pamphlet. Results showed 31% became long-term opioid users, with a significantly lower rate in the educated group (23% vs. 40%). Preoperative opioid use greatly increased the risk of chronic use (over 50% vs. 4%) and was linked to worse shoulder function and pain two years post-op. The study advocates simple pre-op opioid education to reduce long-term use.
