Video Summary
This study examined outcomes following primary medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction in young, active patients with patellar instability. In a retrospective review of 44 knees over nearly 10 years, 72% returned to sport postoperatively, but only 40% regained their pre-injury activity level. Older patients and those undergoing concomitant tibial tubercle osteotomy had lower activity levels after surgery. No dislocations occurred, and graft type did not affect outcomes. Many patients did not resume prior sports due to fear of re-injury or life changes, rather than knee instability. Overall, MPFL reconstruction improves stability and activity but often does not restore pre-injury sports participation.
